Is there an opportunity for community service?
Community service is an integral part of
Scouting and Troop 5. Service projects can be fun such as Memorial Day and July
4th when the Troop provides the food concession for the Maplewood holiday activities though most
service projects are built around Eagle projects. A major advancement
requirement for Eagle is to conceive of a service project, have it approved by
the Town, school or organization it will benefit as well as by the Scout
District, organize and procure any materials that are needed and then schedule
and lead the project with Scout and adult volunteers from Troop 5 or the
community. Projects range from renovating a town recreation building, enhancing
the grounds of a school, building a fence for a church, refurbishing the
Maplewood Town Notice Boards and more. Each time an Eagle candidate has a
project they ask members of Troop 5 to help and it’s a great way to get the
service hours that are required for most ranks in Scouting…plus its fun.
