Troop 5 Unloads Nearly 40,000 Pounds of Pumpkins at Wyoming Presbyterian Church

On Saturday morning, October 3, Troop 5 kept up one of our favorite fall traditions: unloading the pumpkin truck for the Wyoming Presbyterian Church Pumpkin Patch.Eighteen Scouts and five adult leaders showed up in Class B shirts and work gloves. Together with church volunteers, we moved nearly 40,000 pounds of pumpkins from a tractor-trailer to the church lawn. That works out to more than 1,700 pounds per person.

How It Came Together

First, crews laid out rows of pallets across the lawn. Then Scouts climbed into the trailer and worked through the straw-packed bins, passing pumpkins down to the crew at the tailgate. A human chain of Scouts, parents, and church volunteers carried pumpkins hand to hand to the pallets. Wagons hauled the smaller white pumpkins. By the end of the morning, an empty lawn had become a full pumpkin patch. This is service the way Scouts do it best: teamwork, a clear plan, and a lot of lifting. Thank you to Wyoming Presbyterian Church for having us back again this year, and to every Scout, parent, and leader who came out.
