Troop 5: Committed to High Adventure Treks

Pushing Limits, Building Leaders, and Exploring the Wild

At Troop 5, adventure is more than just a part of Scouting—it’s a core tradition. Our Scouts don’t just camp and hike; they push their limits, develop leadership skills, and embrace the challenge of the outdoors through regular high-adventure treks. Whether it’s trekking through the Adirondacks, canoeing across wilderness lakes, scaling mountain peaks, backpacking the Philmont backcountry, or exploring the Caribbean, our commitment to high adventure sets Troop 5 apart.

Why High Adventure?

High-adventure trips are the ultimate test of endurance, skill, and teamwork. These treks offer:
  • Physical and Mental Challenges – Scouts learn perseverance by navigating tough trails, battling the elements, and working as a team to overcome obstacles.
  • Leadership Development – Each trek requires Scouts to take responsibility, make decisions, and lead their peers through real-world challenges.
  • Wilderness Skills – Scouts hone essential survival skills, including backcountry navigation, cooking, first aid, and Leave No Trace principles.
  • A Deeper Connection with Nature – Away from distractions, Scouts experience the raw beauty of the outdoors and develop a lasting respect for the environment.
  • Memories and Friendships for Life – Sharing the highs and lows of adventure builds strong bonds between Scouts, forming friendships that last well beyond their time in the troop.

Some of Our Recent Expeditions

  • Philmont Scout Ranch (New Mexico) A 12-day backpacking expedition through the rugged mountains of New Mexico, covering over 70 miles at high altitudes. Scouts face challenging terrain, unpredictable weather, and self-sufficiency demands, all while developing leadership, resilience, and backcountry survival skills.
  • Massawepie Adirondack Treks (New York) A multi-day canoeing and backpacking adventure deep in the Adirondack wilderness. Scouts navigate pristine lakes, trek remote mountain trails, and experience true backcountry camping, reinforcing their navigation, teamwork, and outdoor survival abilities.
  • Troop 5’s U.S. Virgin Islands Adventure (2024) A one-of-a-kind Caribbean high-adventure experience, where Scouts explored the crystal-clear waters of the Virgin Islands. Activities included snorkeling, scuba diving, and paddleboarding, along with learning about marine ecosystems, island conservation, and local history. This trek combined adventure with environmental education, making it a unique and unforgettable experience.

The Troop 5 Approach: A Scout-Led High-Adventure Program

High-adventure treks in Troop 5 are Scout-led, meaning:
  • Scouts take charge of planning, logistics, and leadership.
  • Senior Scouts mentor younger Scouts, passing down skills and experience.
  • Every trip builds confidence, responsibility, and teamwork.
  • Preparedness and safety are always a top priority, ensuring every Scout is trained and ready.
From first-year Scouts building up to their first trek to seasoned veterans tackling Philmont or Northern Tier, Troop 5 ensures that high adventure is accessible and achievable for every Scout.
