One Saturday Morning Overlooking New York Harbor

By Henry V.

One Saturday morning in December our Scout troop had a one-day visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

We drove a short 30 minutes to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J., where we parked.

We began our adventure at the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, which is no longer used for trains but now serves as a ferry stop for trips to Ellis Island/the Statue of Liberty. After going through security, we got on a ferry to head to the historical site of Ellis Island.

On Ellis Island we saw a little film about all the immigrants who had come through the island to resettle in the United States. We also saw the immigration process, and how they lived on Ellis Island. It was very interesting.

“There we climbed 377 stairs to the top of the base, where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the city.”

After a brief lunch at the picnic tables on Ellis Island, we took a second ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty. There we climbed 377 stairs to the top of the base, where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the city. Inside the Statue of Liberty, we visited two museums, both about the statue in general. After one last ferry ride back to New Jersey, we got into cars and headed home.

We all had a good time and appreciated being able to see a big part of America’s history.
