Sliding Into Winter Sports Weekend

By Peter D.

It was Spring-like weather when we left the parking lot around 7 p.m. to go on our Winter Sports Weekend at Mohawk Mountain Ski Resort.

After a long two hours, we arrived at a cabin at the Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation in Connecticut, where it was colder, and the slope from the parking lot down to the cabin was snow-covered glazed with ice.

We got settled for bed on bunks with mattresses.

Our morning began with breakfast and preparation for the mountain.

We arrived at Mohawk, collected the pre-reserved ski lift passes, some collected their rented equipment, and we stored our gear near the ski rental area.

For about one hour, those of us who already could skied up and down the mountain until the merit badge session.

We showed our ski knowledge, and got the requirements done.

At least one Troop 5 Scout went tubing at a specially designated part of the park.

At about 1 p.m., we ate lunch and took a wonderful photo.

Then, we continued skiing until 4 o’clock, at which point we returned for dinner.

Before dinner, Assistant Scout Master Jeff Bruckner showed us how to wax skis to complete the merit badge.

We watched a movie and had cake after supper.

Then we went to bed.

In the morning we had breakfast and vespers then we made sure to clean the cabin well before we left.
