Spring Has Arrived for Troop 5
By Scoutmaster · April 2026
I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break. My family enjoyed a week away getting in those last days of skiing before spring fully arrived here in New Jersey. And arrive it has — quickly — with scouts already jumping into a busy outdoor season filled with backpacking preparation, leadership, and adventure.
Ten Mile River Backpacking Trip
Our April backpacking trip to Ten Mile River Scout Reservation was a great success. Four scouts experienced backpacking with the troop for the very first time: Andrew, Charlie B., Firas, and Sam. All four did a fantastic job, beginning to build the habits and skills that will prepare them for future high-adventure opportunities like Philmont.
The crew spent the weekend hiking through beautiful Catskill scenery — views of Crystal Lake, a bald eagle nest with a pair of eagles nearby, brilliant stars and satellites overhead, and a sunrise over the lake that made the cold morning more than worthwhile. Check out the photos on the troop’s social media if you haven’t already.
Rafting Trip — May 15–17
Looking ahead, our rafting trip is May 15th–17th. Scout safety is always our top priority during any aquatic outing. We strongly encourage all adult advisors attending to complete the BSA Safety Afloat training before the trip. This short online course helps ensure we continue to provide safe and enjoyable experiences for every scout.
BSA Swim Test — April 26th
Scouts who have not yet completed the BSA swim test — also required for Second Class advancement — will have an opportunity to do so at the district Swim Skills Day on April 26th.

Please note that the swim test completed at Massawepie is valid for the entire scouting year, from August through July.
Thank you to all of the scouts, parents, and adult advisors who continue to make these experiences possible. The troop calendar fills quickly this time of year, but it is exciting to see so many scouts outdoors, challenging themselves, and growing together as a troop.
