The Troop 5 Camping Experience
Where Adventure, Leadership, and Friendship Meet
Camping is at the heart of everything we do in Troop 5. It’s more than just setting up tents and cooking meals—it’s about building self-reliance, teamwork, and leadership while reinforcing the Scout Oath and Law in a hands-on, real-world setting.
Our Camping Program Focuses On:
✅ Skill Development – Scouts practice essential outdoor skills, including fire-building, navigation, first aid, cooking, and Leave No Trace principles.
✅ Youth Leadership – Patrols take full responsibility for planning and executing their campouts, following the Patrol Method to make decisions and work as a team.
✅ Personal Growth – Time in the outdoors builds resilience, independence, and problem-solving abilities as Scouts learn to adapt to new challenges.
✅ Adventure and Exploration – Whether it’s backpacking, canoeing, orienteering, or pioneering projects, our Scouts are constantly learning, discovering, and pushing their limits.
✅ Fun and Friendship – From campfire stories and skits to late-night stargazing, some of the best Scouting memories are made under the open sky.
Monthly Campouts and Special Camping Events
Troop 5 is dedicated to getting outdoors year-round, offering a variety of camping experiences that challenge Scouts of all skill levels.
🌲 Monthly Campouts
We camp almost every month, ensuring Scouts develop confidence and outdoor experience in all seasons. These trips include:
- Scenic hiking destinations
- Survival challenges
- Cooking competitions
- Themed adventures
❄️ Cold-Weather Camping (Klondike Derby & Winter Survival Trips)
Troop 5 doesn’t let cold weather stop us! Our Scouts participate in winter camping experiences, learning to:
🔥 Stay warm in freezing temperatures
🏕 Build snow shelters
💪 Thrive in subzero conditions
The Klondike Derby is a troop favorite, where patrols test their outdoor skills in a competitive winter survival challenge.
🏕 Summer Camp: Two Weeks at Camp Massawepie
For over 25 years, Troop 5 has spent two weeks every summer at Camp Massawepie in the Adirondacks. Unlike most troops who attend for only one week, we immerse ourselves in the full camp experience, allowing Scouts to:
✅ Earn more merit badges without feeling rushed
✅ Take part in high-adventure treks (wilderness canoeing, backpacking, and more)
✅ Become more independent and confident in their outdoor skills
✅ Deepen friendships and leadership abilities
Summer camp is often the highlight of the year—filled with challenges, new experiences, and lifelong memories.
🏕 Backpacking and Wilderness Expeditions
For Scouts looking to take their camping skills to the next level, Troop 5 organizes backpacking and high-adventure treks, including:
🥾 Appalachian Trail hikes
⛰️ Adirondack High Peaks backpacking trips
🚣 Canoeing expeditions in remote wilderness areas
These treks teach self-sufficiency, endurance, and navigation skills, preparing Scouts for bigger high-adventure expeditions like Philmont, Northern Tier, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
🏕 Specialty Camping: Beach Camping, Nautical Overnights, and More
Camping with Troop 5 isn’t just about deep woods and mountains—we also explore unique environments that broaden our Scouts’ experiences, such as:
🏖️ Beach Camping on the Atlantic Coast – Experience sleeping under the stars with the sound of waves in the background.
🏰 Historic Campouts – Overnight trips at sites like West Point and Fort Mifflin, where Scouts learn about military history and past battles.
⚓ Nautical Overnights – Sleeping aboard legendary ships like the USS Intrepid or Battleship Cove, where Scouts immerse themselves in naval history while bunking in real ship berths.
These one-of-a-kind experiences mix history, education, and adventure, giving Scouts a broader perspective on the world around them.
The Patrol Method in Action
At every campout, Troop 5 follows the Patrol Method, ensuring that Scouts take responsibility and develop leadership skills by:
✅ Planning meals and cooking in patrols
✅ Setting up tents and campsite infrastructure
✅ Organizing duty rosters and leading activities
✅ Teaching and mentoring younger Scouts
Camping is where Troop 5 Scouts step up, take charge, and practice leadership in a real-world environment.
Why Camping Matters
Camping is where Scouts truly grow. It’s where they:
🌲 Gain confidence by overcoming challenges
🔥 Learn independence and responsibility
⛺ Experience the beauty and peace of nature
🎖️ Build leadership skills that last a lifetime
At Troop 5, camping is more than an activity—it’s a way of life that defines our troop’s culture, strengthens our Scouts, and creates adventures they’ll remember forever.
