Community Service

One of the goals of Troop 5 is to identify and complete service projects that enhance and give back to our community. Through service, Scouts—as well as parents and adult leaders—learn how gratifying and rewarding it is to help others and carry those values into their daily lives beyond Scouting.

A key requirement for the rank of Eagle Scout is the Eagle Scout Service Project, which challenges Scouts to plan, lead, and complete a significant project that benefits the community. Troop 5 Scouts, leaders, parents, and alumni work together to support these projects and ensure their success.

Service projects in recent years have included:

  • Building shade and comfort for shelter dogs at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center

  • Restoring community kiosks along Springfield Avenue in Maplewood

  • Rebuilding The Dell outdoor classroom at Tuscan School

  • Painting a mural of an underwater scene at St. Barnabas Children’s Waiting Area

  • Constructing and repairing raised flower beds for science projects at Seth Boyden School

  • Painting and repairing the multi-purpose building at Maplecrest Park

  • Repairing the preschool playground fence at Morrow Memorial Church
  • Collecting school supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims for a school in New Orleans

  • Cleaning, painting, and repairing the Orchard Park multi-purpose building

  • Refurbishing six community bulletin boards throughout Maplewood

Service is at the heart of Scouting. Troop 5 continues to seek out opportunities where Scouts can apply their skills, teamwork, and leadership to make a lasting difference in Maplewood and beyond.
