Up Among the Tree Tops at FlagX

By Henry V.
Troop 5 went on a campout in October to Mount Allamuchy Scout Reservation.
We drove to the reservation and set up tents in the dark.  That may sound hard, but we’ve done it many times and know how to get it done quickly.  We went to bed soon afterwards, excited for the ropes course the next day.

Saturday morning started with light rain, and we had a simple cereal breakfast before we got ready to leave. We headed to FlagX Adventure Course in Ledgewood N.J. Even in the rain, most of us tackled three courses, and some even went for the very challenging ‘black level’ (Level 5). A lot of scouts showed resilience and pushed themselves through the obstacles, even in the cold rain.

“It might have been rainy, but it was an awesome weekend.”

During the course, I found a trick to make it through the tough spots—using my safety harness as a sort of zip line/swing.  I know this wasn’t the intended way to do it, but the instructor said it was okay.  I shared the idea with another Scout’s mom who was with us and who was also struggling, and she really appreciated it. After drying off in the gift shop, we went back to the campsite for a lunch of sandwiches and chips.

Later that day, we built a fire to warm up and enjoyed some good hot dogs for an early dinner. We wrapped up the night with songs under a shelter to stay dry. Rain seems to follow Troop 5, but we always find a way to make the best of it. Like our old Scout Master used to say, “Any troop can camp in good weather, but only Troop 5 can camp in any weather.” Sunday morning, we had eggs and bacon for breakfast, and the trip ended with a simple Vespers service. It might have been rainy, but it was an awesome weekend.
